The Kanzu Mill is located in the southwest of Rwanda in Karambi, Nyamasheke. That district lays over a mountain range that borders the southern shore of Lake Kivu. The lake & range are all apart of the East African Rift — that whole geographic feature creates most of the elevation needed for coffee growing in the NE of the African continent (i.e. Rwanda, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania etc).
This is a classically mill-washed Rwandan coffee — extended dry fermentation followed by a soaking stage to break up cherry mucilage. Coffee seeds are dried on raised bed to ventilate, then rested & warehoused in Kigali.
Red Fox, one of our coffee importers, sources these coffees from a group called Dorman’s, who has done export services for the Kanzu mill since 2012. Along with bringing these coffees to market, Dorman’s invests in mill infrustructure & agronomic training for the farmers milling at Kanzu.
